What is Woodworm?
Woodworm, also known as the furniture beetle, is a general term used to describe wooden insect pests that eat their way through the timber. The name woodworm can also be used to describe the adult beetle when it emerges from the timber where it has been feeding on the sap and boring galleries under the surface. When the larvae of moth species bore “holes” they eat their way through the timber then emerge as adult beetles. The tens or hundreds of channels bored by the beetle larvae in the wood decrease the tensile strength of the timber. The devastating effect of woodworm means that roofs are left open to the elements, and people living in affected properties do not have any long-term security. Woodworm can attack your furniture and timber structures all year round, as well as the larvae burrowing into and impacting your home.

Types of Woodworms
The most common woodworms larvae that attack timber are the Common Furniture Beetle (Anobium punctatum) and the House Longhorn Beetle (Hylotrupes bajulus).
The woodworm beetles in the Anobiidae family can be found all over the world. These beetles seek out dead or dying wood, as they are commonly called wood-borers. They cause damage to softwood timber by the female laying her eggs in the moist timber. The grubs then hatch and start to tunnel through the wood, leaving behind them a passageway of rubble and dust which accumulates at each end of their tunneling route.
What are the signs of woodworm
The presence of woodworm is usually signaled when you see piles of sawdust and frass around infested wood. It can be difficult to detect a beetle infestation in a house. You might not see any evidence of it until well into the problem. The first signs of woodworm activity are small holes in the wood of a piece of furniture. They appear as small dimpled holes, roughly 1 to 2mm wide, and maybe either filled with sawdust or empty. Once your property has been affected by woodworm, you’re facing an expensive headache. This is why it is important to be able to tell if your home furniture or roof has been attacked by a woodworm. If you want to make sure that your home is protected for the future, you need to regularly inspect it for signs of woodworm.
Why Is Woodworm Infestation A Concern in Eastbourne
Woodworm is a common problem in many areas of Eastbourne; it causes serious structural damage to buildings. Woodworms can attack many different types of wood and wood-based products, including timber flooring, cedar decking, garden furniture, fence posts, and so on. Woodworm is mostly found in untreated, damp softwood. This is usually within the first 10mm of any external wooden structure.
However, if your roof has already been infected, it is important to take care of the problem. Otherwise, the woodworm can move into other parts of your home. Pets can carry woodworm larvae, so you should keep pets away from old furniture and other old items that may be infested. It is also possible for woodworm to burrow through the internal walls of a house and spread throughout the property.
How do I know when I need to use a woodworm treatment
If you’ve noticed small holes in your furniture or the flooring, this could be a sign of an infestation by these parasites. As there are legal and health & safety issues related to treating woodworm, it’s crucial that you chose leading experts in the field. Don’t ignore your woodworm problem. Identifying and Removing Woodworms in Eastbourne
These parasites are smart enough to only target structural wood including, roof timbers, door frames, etc., that have not been treated. Infestations can spread to joinery and common furniture, giving them an unsightly and crumbling look. There are many woodworm treatments on the market from different brands. Some of this product can be applied both to the inside and outside of a building, or else just to the interior if required. Woodworm killers can be used amongst children and pets once the woodworm killer has been dry for a minimum of 24 hours. In terms of smell, this is largely present if the woodworm treatment is solvent-based.
Solvent-based products have very strong smells that can be difficult to handle, while water-based products have a much lighter smell. We recommend that no one is allowed in the area to be treated for an 8-hour period. We discuss with our clients to schedule a treatment at a time that is convenient for them. Our top of the range equipment and expertise enables us to find woodworms and treat your property in a non-invasive manner that is guaranteed to bring long term, permanent results.

Can I Check If My Home Has Been Attacked By Woodworm?

Having experts carefully examine your property so you know exactly what the condition is, is the best way to find out.
